Around the same time every evening I take a drive for about 30 minutes, picking up my daughter, on one of our busy roads. I have my Zen music playing, while driving with caution and paying attention to my surroundings.
In front of me, behind me and all around me, using my peripheral vision, there are some people driving alone but the majority of the cars are filled with families. The lone driver talking on phones, using hands free device or just holding the phone. Let’s talk about the car behind me; while at the red light, I glance in my rear view mirror. In this car, the dad is driving, while mom is talking on her mobile phone, a baby is sleep in the car seat, the other kids, not sure of age, but they each have mobile phones or some type of technological device.
They are possibly texting and or playing games in the back seat. I’m sure it has been a long day, parents coming home from work, possibly picking up the kids from daycare, aftercare or may be after school activities.
Wow, it’s amazing what you see in 2 minutes at a red light.
Here I am driving alone (no I don’t talk or text while driving) and this car is filled with a family, who is not talking to one another. Unbelievable! I wonder, shouldn’t some of this time (10-15 minutes) be used to talk to one another? Yes the day may have been stressful, but imagine through conversation with one another (parents) maybe something said could cause laughter that can help lift some of the stress.
This is also a good time to talk and listen to your children. They may talk about their day at school, whether it was a good or bad day. If done daily for few minutes it may help with a child that does not really talk about their day, why? Because everyone is so consumed with the mobile phones or devices, they may feel that they are interrupting. So instead, they keep quiet and possibly start texting and/or playing on their mobile phones or devices.
Imagine conversation during the drive, long or short how quickly the time will pass. Maybe put away those mobile devices for a few minutes, and talk to your family. Communication is key in all relationships, especially family.
It could make for a healthy family, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Again, is your family healthy?
